The above are statues which are know as the Elgin Marbles.
During 1799 through 1803 Thomas Bruce, Earl of Elgin was the ambassador to Constantinople.
He was asked to use his influence to obtain casts of famous sculptures in Greece,
which was under Turkish control at the time. He proceeded to get permission
to remove any of the sculptures. So many sculptures were removed and eventual
sold to the British Museum where they are still housed today.
